# Glutathione

GSH, gamma-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine

Every cell in your body makes its own glutathione. In one small study, older adults built it at about a third of the younger rate, and two weeks of the raw materials closed the gap.

## Glutathione, in short

Glutathione is a three-amino-acid peptide that every cell makes from glutamate, cysteine and glycine. It is the body’s main antioxidant, buffering oxidative stress and supporting immune function. It is studied for aging, skin color and Parkinson’s disease, and taken by mouth, injection or IV. Trials show it can raise body stores, while benefits beyond low levels are less clear.

## Before you consider Glutathione

- Safety

Oral glutathione and the IV Parkinson’s pilot were well tolerated, but the studies were short. No long-term IV safety studies exist.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[6](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-hauser-2009)[9](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-davids-2016)

## How does Glutathione work?

Glutathione works inside cells. Does swallowing or infusing it change what happens there?

-

### Mops up damaging molecules

Glutathione is the cell’s main defense against oxidative stress, the wear that damaging molecules cause.[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)

-

### Cells build it themselves

Cells make it from three building blocks: glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Protein in food supplies them.[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)

-

### Helps immune cells

It helps manage the immune response. In one oral trial, a type of immune cell was more than twice as active on the higher dose.[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)

## Glutathione benefits: what it is studied for

The best evidence is that glutathione levels can be raised. Evidence that doing so improves health in people without a deficiency is thin.

1.

Human study01

### Raising body stores

In a 6-month trial of 54 healthy adults, oral glutathione raised blood levels and reduced a marker of oxidative stress. Levels returned to baseline within a month of stopping.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)

2.

Human study02

### Aging and deficiency

Older adults made less glutathione and had lower red cell levels. Two weeks of cysteine and glycine raised levels by 94.6% and brought them in line with younger people.[3](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sekhar-2011)

3.

Human study03

### Skin color

Reviews of small trials find oral and topical glutathione may lighten skin in sun-exposed areas, but the evidence is inconclusive because of study quality.[7](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-dilokthornsakul-2019)[8](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sarkar-2025)

4.

Human study04

### Parkinson’s disease

A pilot trial of IV glutathione in 21 people with Parkinson’s disease found it well tolerated but no significant difference from placebo on the main rating scale.[6](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-hauser-2009)

3.

3 · People Studied

A 6-month trial in 54 healthy adults showed oral glutathione raises blood levels. That trial did not test whether this improves health.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)

Shows it works in people

Oral glutathione was long assumed to be digested before it could matter. The 2015 trial showed otherwise for blood levels, with rises of 30 to 35% in several compartments on the higher dose. It did not test whether that improves disease.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[9](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-davids-2016)[8](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sarkar-2025)

IV glutathione has little controlled data. A 2016 review found no studies of IV glutathione for skin lightening or of its safety for chronic use, and a 2025 dermatology review found a single placebo-controlled IV study.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[9](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-davids-2016)[8](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sarkar-2025)

## Why your cells make their own antioxidant

Burning fuel leaves exhaust. Inside most of your cells, the mitochondria that turn food into energy release reactive oxygen molecules as a by-product, and left unchecked those molecules damage fats, proteins and DNA. Your cells do not wait for antioxidants to arrive from the diet. They make their own, and the most abundant one is glutathione.

Glutathione is small, just three amino acids, glutamate, cysteine and glycine, joined in a chain. Chemists call it the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol in animal cells, a sulfur-bearing molecule that can give up an electron to neutralize an oxidant. Paired with its used-up form, it makes the main redox couple that sets a cell’s antioxidant balance.

Two enzymes build it, one step at a time. The first, gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase, sets the pace, and it depends on how much cysteine is available. When glutathione levels are high, they slow their own production. Protein in the diet matters, because animal and human studies show adequate protein is crucial for keeping glutathione steady.

Its job list goes well beyond mopping up oxidants. Glutathione takes part in nutrient metabolism, gene expression, DNA and protein synthesis, cell division and immune signaling. Low levels are linked to aging and to conditions from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease to liver disease and diabetes. A link is not a cause, and that gap is where most of the glutathione debate lives.[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)

## How glutathione works: the cell’s redox buffer

Think of glutathione as a buffer, the way a pool’s chemistry resists swings in acidity. Each time it neutralizes an oxidant, a reduced glutathione molecule pairs with another and becomes oxidized glutathione. The cell then recycles it back. The ratio of the two forms works as a gauge of how stressed a cell is.

That gauge is measurable in blood. In the 2015 oral glutathione trial, the ratio of oxidized to reduced glutathione in whole blood fell in both dose groups after six months, a sign of lower oxidative stress. That is a measured change in a controlled trial, the standard worth holding every glutathione claim to.

Glutathione also tunes the immune system. It helps regulate cytokine production and immune responses, and in the same trial, natural killer cells, the immune cells that destroy infected and abnormal cells, became more than twice as active on the higher dose compared with placebo at three months.

There is a quieter role too. Glutathione attaches to proteins in a process called glutathionylation, which changes how those proteins behave and helps relay signals inside the cell. That is why researchers describe it as a regulator of cell behavior and not only a cleanup crew.[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)

## How glutathione is broken down and rebuilt

Outside cells, an enzyme called gamma-glutamyl transferase, GGT, breaks glutathione down and makes its amino acids available to cells, which then rebuild glutathione inside. Glutathione outside a cell can be dismantled and rebuilt within it, which is one reason the cell’s own production line matters so much.

GGT is also a familiar line on a blood test. Doctors have long used it as a marker of liver strain and alcohol intake. Conditions that raise it, such as blocked bile flow, heavy drinking and some medicines, increase free radical production and the threat of glutathione depletion.

High GGT carries weight of its own. In population studies, people with high serum GGT have higher mortality and more coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. Part of that comes from other risk factors that travel with it, and part of it is independent. A test most people never look at turns out to say something about their oxidative load.

Because cysteine sets the pace, the body can make glutathione from several upstream sources. Cystine, methionine and N-acetylcysteine, better known as NAC, all feed cysteine into tissue glutathione production. That gives you more than one way to support the same system.[5](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-whitfield-2001)[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)

## Glutathione and aging: a factory short on parts

In 2011, researchers at Baylor College of Medicine asked a simple question. Do older adults have less glutathione because they burn through it, or because they make less? They traced glutathione production in 8 older and 8 younger adults using a labeled form of glycine.

The answer was production. Older adults had about half the red cell glutathione of younger people, and they made it at roughly a third of the younger rate. Their red cells held less than half as much glycine and less cysteine, and their blood showed more oxidative stress and more oxidant damage to fats.

Then came the useful part. After two weeks of cysteine and glycine, the older adults’ glutathione rose by 94.6% and their production rate more than tripled. Oxidative stress fell, and on these measures they were no longer different from the young group. The factory was intact. It had been short on parts.

The same team followed up with a randomized trial. Twenty-four older adults took glycine plus NAC, a combination called GlyNAC, or a placebo for 16 weeks. The GlyNAC group improved glutathione, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, inflammation, insulin resistance, gait speed and strength. The trial was small and came from one group, so it needs replication. It still reframes the question from how much glutathione you can add to whether your cells have what they need to make it.[3](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sekhar-2011)[4](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-kumar-2023)

## Does oral glutathione work? The absorption question

For years, the standard answer was no. Glutathione is a peptide, and the gut breaks down peptides, so dermatology reviewers still describe oral glutathione as questionable because of limited absorption. A team at Penn State tested the assumption directly with a six-month randomized, double-blind trial in 54 non-smoking adults.

Blood glutathione rose at one, three and six months on both doses. On the higher dose, levels rose 30 to 35% in red cells, plasma and lymphocytes and about 260% in cells from the inside of the cheek. On the lower dose, blood and red cell levels rose 17% and 29%. The changes grew with dose and with time.

Then the supplement stopped, and within a month levels were back to baseline. That detail is easy to skip and worth keeping. In this trial, oral glutathione behaved like a maintenance input. It raised stores while people took it, and the gain did not outlast a month off.

What the trial did not test is whether higher stores improve health in people who were not deficient. It measured glutathione levels, an oxidative stress ratio and immune markers. That is real evidence that swallowing glutathione can raise body stores, whether it arrives intact or is rebuilt from its parts, and it stops short of evidence of benefit.[7](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-dilokthornsakul-2019)[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)

## Glutathione injections and IV: what the trials show

IV glutathione goes straight into the blood, and injections into muscle or under the skin skip the gut, though they still have to be absorbed from the site. The harder question is what happens next. One small placebo-controlled test of IV glutathione comes from Parkinson’s disease, one of the conditions linked to glutathione deficiency.

In a 2009 double-blind pilot, 21 people whose Parkinson’s symptoms were not well controlled received IV glutathione or placebo over four weeks. Glutathione was well tolerated, with no withdrawals for side effects. Symptom scores improved slightly more on glutathione during treatment and worsened slightly more after it stopped, but neither difference was statistically significant.

Reviews of IV use across indications tell a similar story. A 2016 review found two systematic reviews of IV glutathione to prevent chemotherapy toxicity and one in Parkinson’s disease, covering 10 trials. Most reported no or minimal side effects, but every trial lasted a few doses or 4 to 12 weeks, and none studied long-term IV use.

So injections answer the delivery question without answering the outcome question. Getting glutathione into the blood is not the same as showing a benefit, and these studies do not validate a routine injection course. For a person, that argues for a clinician’s judgment and a named goal rather than a standing weekly habit.[6](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-hauser-2009)[9](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-davids-2016)

## Glutathione for skin: lightening, melasma and the evidence

Many people first hear about glutathione because of skin. It is widely used across Asia as a skin-lightening supplement, and the idea has a biological basis. Glutathione has anti-melanin and antioxidant properties, and it can shift pigment production away from dark brown melanin.

A 2019 systematic review found four clinical studies. Oral and topical glutathione brightened skin in sun-exposed areas, measured by a melanin index, with no significant difference in sun-protected skin, and showed trends toward fewer wrinkles and UV spots. Side effects were non-serious. The authors still called the evidence inconclusive because of study quality.

A 2025 review in the International Journal of Dermatology found five randomized trials of oral glutathione that reduced the melanin index compared with placebo, and topical forms that worked better at higher strengths. It also found that the effects were unsustainable once use stopped, and only one placebo-controlled IV study, which did not reach significance.

On IV use for skin, both reviews were blunt. The 2016 review warned there were no studies of IV glutathione for lightening and raised a theoretical concern that moving people from brown to red melanin could raise sun-related skin cancer risk. The 2025 review concluded that IV glutathione should not be used for lightening, given the lack of efficacy and its side effects.[7](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-dilokthornsakul-2019)[8](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sarkar-2025)[9](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-davids-2016)

## Glutathione vs NAC: two routes to the same supply

NAC, N-acetylcysteine, is a precursor of cysteine, the amino acid that limits how fast cells can make glutathione. Taking NAC is a bet on the production line. Taking glutathione is a bet on delivering the finished product, which outside cells can be broken down to its amino acids and rebuilt inside.

Each route has human data of a different kind. Oral glutathione raised blood and cell levels over six months in healthy adults. Cysteine and glycine restored glutathione in older adults within two weeks, and glycine plus NAC improved a wider set of aging measures over 16 weeks in a small randomized trial.

None of the studies cited here compares them head to head in a large trial, so there is no proven winner. Protein intake shapes how much glutathione you can make, and the small precursor studies were done in older adults, but none of that is a rule for an individual. A clinician can weigh whether direct glutathione, its building blocks or neither makes sense for you.[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)[5](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-whitfield-2001)[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[3](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sekhar-2011)[4](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-kumar-2023)

## Glutathione side effects and safety

In the trials that exist, glutathione has been well tolerated. The IV Parkinson’s pilot found no safety concerns and no withdrawals for side effects, and a 2019 skin review reported only non-serious effects. A 2025 review was less relaxed about oral use, describing minimal side effects with topical glutathione and more substantial ones by mouth.

The gaps are about time and route. The 2016 review, which searched the literature through 2015, found no study of long-term IV use for any purpose, and it noted that clinics advertise IV glutathione widely, including product bought online. Every injection carries the basic risks of a needle and depends on sterile preparation.

There are specific situations to raise with a clinician first. People having cancer treatment or surgery should tell their care team about any antioxidant, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding should ask before starting. IV glutathione for skin lightening is the use the evidence argues against most clearly.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[6](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-hauser-2009)[7](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-dilokthornsakul-2019)[9](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-davids-2016)[8](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sarkar-2025)

## Labs that show your glutathione picture

Most people never have glutathione measured directly, and no routine blood test stands in for it. What standard labs offer is general context a clinician can review. GGT is the obvious one to know about. It is the enzyme that breaks glutathione down outside cells, and a raised level can go with liver or bile-duct problems, alcohol or some medicines, though it does not measure glutathione itself.

Homocysteine sits upstream. It feeds the sulfur pathway that supplies cysteine, the building block that limits glutathione production, though its blood level also depends on B vitamins and kidney function and is not a measure of cysteine supply. ALT, a liver enzyme, shows whether liver cells are under stress, and hs-CRP shows whether body-wide inflammation is in the background.

Vitals Vault offers glutathione injections prescribed online by licensed US clinicians, who review your health history before deciding whether they fit. A baseline panel gives that review context on your liver, kidneys and inflammation. A later change in those markers can be worth discussing, but it cannot by itself show that glutathione did the work.[5](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-whitfield-2001)[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)

## Where glutathione stands in 2026

Glutathione lives in two regulatory worlds. By mouth, it is sold in the US as a dietary supplement. As an injection, it is not an FDA-approved drug, and pharmacies compound it with a prescription. FDA’s updated 503A list from May 2026 places it in category 1, under evaluation, where FDA does not intend to act against compounders who meet the interim policy’s conditions.

Athletes have one more rule to know. Glutathione is not banned by name, but WADA restricts IV infusions and injections above a set volume within 12 hours, outside of hospital care.[10](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-fda-503a-list)[11](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-fda-503a)[13](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wada)

## What this means for you

Glutathione is the antioxidant your cells make for themselves, and the strongest human evidence is about supply. Oral glutathione raises stores while you take it, injections deliver it directly, and in older adults the building blocks alone restored low levels. Evidence that extra glutathione improves health in people who are not low is still thin.

If you are considering it, the question worth asking first is whether your body is short on glutathione at all. And if it is, is it short on parts, or spending glutathione faster than it can make it?[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[3](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sekhar-2011)[4](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-kumar-2023)

## What to expect with Glutathione

A good start is a health history and a baseline panel, so a clinician has general context on your liver, GGT, homocysteine and inflammation before choosing a route. With injections, the prescriber sets the dose and how often, and the plan should name what you hope to change.

On timing, the human studies give useful markers. Oral glutathione raised blood levels within a month and kept them up for six months, then lost the gain a month after stopping. Building blocks restored levels in older adults in two weeks, and broader changes in a later trial appeared over 16 weeks. Skin changes, where they occurred, faded once use stopped.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[3](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sekhar-2011)[4](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-kumar-2023)[8](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sarkar-2025)

## Glutathione myths and evidence

-

### Oral glutathione is destroyed in the gut, so it does nothing

A six-month randomized trial found daily oral glutathione raised levels in blood, red cells and white cells in a dose-dependent way. Levels did return to baseline within a month of stopping.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)

### Low glutathione with age means you need to take glutathione

In older adults, low glutathione came from slow production, and two weeks of its building blocks, cysteine and glycine, restored levels to those of young adults. That makes precursors a well-supported route for this kind of deficiency. Oral glutathione raised stores in healthy adults in a separate trial, but it has not been tested the same way in deficient older adults.[3](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sekhar-2011)

### IV glutathione is a safe, proven way to lighten skin

A 2016 review found no studies of IV glutathione for skin lightening and no long-term safety data, and a 2025 review advised against IV use for this purpose. Oral and topical forms have modest, temporary effects.[9](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-davids-2016)[8](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sarkar-2025)

### More antioxidant is always better

Glutathione works as a balance between its reduced and oxidized forms, and the clearest improvements cited here came in small precursor studies of older adults who started deficient. Those studies do not show how baseline levels predict benefit, and evidence in people with normal levels is limited.[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)[3](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sekhar-2011)

## How is Glutathione taken?

Glutathione is taken by mouth as a supplement, given by IV drip or injection in clinics, and applied to skin in topical products. Absorption by mouth is better than once assumed, but the long-term effects of each route are not well studied. Your prescriber decides the route.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[9](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-davids-2016)

## Glutathione dosage

There is no FDA-approved dose for glutathione as a drug. In a six-month trial in healthy adults, daily oral capsules at a lower and a higher amount both raised body stores, and a small Parkinson’s trial gave IV infusions three times a week for four weeks. The table shows both. Supplement labels set their own serving sizes. Your clinician sets your dose and route, and be wary of IV bars that do not review your history and labs.[2](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-richie-2015)[6](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-hauser-2009)

## Typical Glutathione dosage

In human trials, oral glutathione was taken every day for six months by healthy non-smoking adults, at a set total amount per day, and IV glutathione was infused three times a week for four weeks in people with Parkinson’s disease. No FDA label sets a dose. Your clinician sets the actual dose and route.

These are reference doses from FDA labels, studies in people and clinical practice reports, shown for education. They are not a recommendation or a prescription. Your dose, form and schedule should be set by a licensed clinician who knows your history and lab results.

## You make glutathione from what you eat and how you live

Glutathione depends on its raw materials and on how much is used up. In older adults, low levels came from a shortage of cysteine and glycine, and those two amino acids fixed it.

Protein in the diet supplies them. Liver enzymes, GGT and inflammation markers do not measure glutathione, but they give a clinician useful context.[1](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-wu-2004)[3](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-sekhar-2011)

### What else moves the same system

1. 01Eat enough proteinCysteine and glycine come from dietary protein, and adequate protein is needed to keep glutathione stable.
2. 02Cut the oxidant loadOxidative stress uses glutathione up, so look at what adds to it before adding a supplement.
3. 03Watch the liverALT and GGT show how stressed the liver is.
4. 04Know your inflammationhs-CRP shows whether a body-wide inflammatory load is part of the picture.

## Is Glutathione FDA approved?

FDA has not approved glutathione as an injectable drug, and oral glutathione is sold as a dietary supplement. Pharmacies can compound glutathione injections with a prescription. FDA lists it in category 1 of its 503A list, which means it is under evaluation and FDA does not intend to act against a compounder using it if the interim policy’s conditions are met. FDA’s October 2026 enforcement discretion covers six other peptides.[10](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-fda-503a-list)[11](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-fda-503a)[12](https://www.vitalsvault.com/peptides/glutathione#source-ncpa)

## Glutathione questions

What is glutathione used for?

Glutathione is the body’s main antioxidant. It is taken as a supplement or given by injection or IV for antioxidant support, aging, liver health and skin color. None of these uses is FDA-approved.

What are the benefits of glutathione?

Oral glutathione raised blood levels and reduced an oxidative stress marker in a 6-month trial. In older adults, its building blocks restored low levels. Skin-lightening effects are inconclusive, and an IV pilot in Parkinson’s disease found no significant benefit.

How does glutathione work?

It neutralizes oxidants inside cells and helps regulate immune function and cell signaling. Cells make it from glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and the supply of cysteine sets the pace.

Is oral glutathione absorbed?

Yes, to a degree. In a 6-month randomized trial, daily oral glutathione raised glutathione in blood, red cells and white cells, and levels returned to baseline a month after stopping.

What are the side effects of glutathione?

Short studies have mostly reported non-serious effects, with a 2025 review describing minimal side effects for topical use and more substantial ones for oral use. A 2016 review found no long-term IV safety studies, so IV use should be supervised by a clinician.

Does glutathione whiten skin?

Reviews of small trials suggest oral and topical glutathione may lighten sun-exposed skin slightly, and the effect fades when it stops. The evidence is inconclusive, and a 2025 review advised against IV glutathione for this purpose.

What is the glutathione dosage?

There is no FDA-approved dose. Trials used a daily oral amount for six months in healthy adults and IV infusions three times a week for four weeks in Parkinson’s disease. Supplement labels set serving sizes, and your clinician sets your dose.

Glutathione or NAC, which is better?

NAC supplies cysteine, the building block that limits how much glutathione your cells can make. In older adults, cysteine and glycine restored low glutathione levels, so precursors are an established alternative to taking glutathione itself.

Is glutathione FDA approved?

Glutathione is sold in the US as a dietary supplement. FDA has not approved it as an injectable drug, and lists it in category 1 of its 503A bulk substances list, meaning it is under evaluation.

Is glutathione banned in sports?

Glutathione is not a banned substance by name, but WADA restricts IV infusions and injections above a set volume in a 12-hour period except in hospital treatment. Tested athletes should check with their anti-doping organization.

Can I get glutathione through Vitals Vault?

Yes. Vitals Vault offers glutathione injections prescribed online by licensed US clinicians. A clinician reviews your health history and decides whether it is right for you, and a blood panel gives that review general health context.
